Day 4: Adding Students and Co-Teachers to Your Google Classroom
Introduction
Now that you’ve set up your Google Classroom and explored the interface, it’s time to add students and co-teachers. Whether you’re preparing for a real classroom environment or practicing for future teaching, understanding how to manage users effectively is essential. This guide will walk you through different methods for adding participants and best practices for classroom management.
Adding Students to Your Google Classroom
Google Classroom offers two ways to add students: Class Code and Email Invitations.
Method 1: Using a Class Code (Best for large groups)
- Open Google Classroom and go to your class.
- Click on the People tab.
- Locate the Class Code in the top banner.
- Share the code with students (via email, syllabus, or announcement).
- Students enter the code at Google Classroom by clicking Join Class.
💡 Tip: If a student enters the wrong class, you can remove them from the People tab.
Method 2: Sending Email Invitations (Best for smaller groups or specific students)
- Go to the People tab in your class.
- Click the Invite Students button.
- Enter their email addresses (Google accounts required).
- Click Send Invitation – students will receive an email with a join link.
Managing Students in Google Classroom
Once students are added, you can:
- Mute students if necessary (to prevent posting in the Stream).
- Remove students if they no longer need access.
- Check student activity via assignments and participation.
Adding Co-Teachers to Your Classroom
If you're working with a mentor, fellow educator, or teaching assistant, adding a co-teacher can be incredibly useful.
Steps to Add a Co-Teacher
- Open your Google Classroom and go to the People tab.
- Under Teachers, click Invite Teachers.
- Enter the email address of your co-teacher.
- Click Send Invitation – they will receive an email to join.
💡 Note: Co-teachers have the same permissions as you (except for deleting the class). They can create assignments, grade work, and interact with students.
Best Practices for Managing Students and Co-Teachers
✔ Use Class Code for large groups and emails for specific invites.
✔ Regularly update your roster – remove inactive students.
✔ Communicate expectations – make sure students and co-teachers understand their roles.
✔ Monitor engagement – check who is participating and address concerns early.
