Day 5 of 50: Adding Text Overlays and Titles in iMovie
Welcome to Day 5 of the 50-Day iMovie Tutorial Series! Today, we’re learning how to add text overlays and titles to your videos. Whether you want to introduce a scene, highlight key information, or end with credits, iMovie makes it simple to add text that enhances your video’s story.
Why Use Text in Your Videos?
Text can serve multiple purposes in your video:
- Introduce Scenes: Titles or lower-thirds help your audience follow the narrative.
- Highlight Key Info: Add names, dates, or context to your clips.
- Engage Viewers: Call out action points, like “Subscribe Now” or “Visit Our Website.”
- Add Polish: Ending credits or stylish captions add a professional touch.
Step 1: Access the Titles Browser
All text and title options are located in the Titles Browser:
- Open Your Project:
- Open the project you’re working on in iMovie.
- Click the Titles Tab:
- At the top of the Media Library, click Titles. You’ll see a variety of pre-designed text templates.
Tip: Hover over a title template to preview its animation in the Viewer.
Step 2: Adding a Title to Your Timeline
There are two ways to add text:

Drag and Drop:
- Drag your desired title template from the Titles Browser onto your timeline.
- Place it above a video clip for an overlay or on a blank space to create a standalone title screen.

Double-Click:
- Double-click a title in the browser to add it to the playhead’s position in your timeline.
Step 3: Editing Your Text
Once your title is on the timeline, you can customize it:

Select the Title Clip:
- Click on the title clip in your timeline to open the Text Editor in the Viewer.

Enter Your Text:
- Click on the placeholder text in the Viewer and type your custom message.

Customize Fonts and Colors:
- Use the formatting options at the top of the Viewer to:
- Change the font and size.
- Adjust the color of the text.
- Apply bold, italic, or outline effects.

Position the Text:
- Drag the text box in the Viewer to reposition it on the screen.
Pro Tip: Use alignment options (left, center, or right) to fit your text to the scene.
Step 4: Adjusting Title Duration
You can control how long your text stays on the screen:

Drag the Edges:
- Click and drag the edges of the title clip in the timeline to shorten or lengthen its duration.

Sync with the Scene:
- Place the title so it aligns with key moments in your video, such as an action or scene change.
Step 5: Types of Titles You Can Use
Here are some common title templates in iMovie and how to use them effectively:
- Standard Title:
- Use for introducing a scene or your video.
- Lower Third:
- Perfect for adding names, dates, or locations to a scene.
- Centered Title:
- Best for standalone moments like a quote or intro screen.
- Credits:
- Add at the end of your video for rolling or scrolling credits.
- Stylized Titles:
- Use templates like "Reveal" or "Boogie Lights" for fun and creative videos.
Day 5 Mini-Task: Practice Adding Titles
Take 20 minutes today to:
- Add at least three types of titles to your timeline (e.g., Lower Third, Standard Title, and Credits).
- Customize the font, size, and color of each title.
- Adjust the duration and placement of your titles so they sync with your video.
